The Republic Seabee was built between and , with over aircraft being sold. The type was rather underpowered and many were later fitted with more powerful engines than the &#;hp (&#;kW) Franklin 6A8 originally fitted.

In , former Helio company engineer Joseph W. Gigante () designed a twin-engine konvertering of the Sea Bee and founded United Consultants Corp in Norwood, Massachusetts, to undertake the manufacturing work on the UC-1 Twin Bee.[1]

The first aircraft flew in and the type certificate was awarded on 25 June 23 production examples were delivered between and

    NHJ (#) Crashed

[] Sadly, news reports confirm that Twin Bee #, NHJ, crashed in Sweden yesterday - July 18, The Twin Bee was flying water landing training on Lake Siljan, Dalarna, when for unknown reasons the aircraft crashed and sank. The Twin Bee had two German nationals on board. One person was taken to hospital, but perished shortly after. The second person is still missing at this date.

NHJ is owned by Mr. Henner Jud, who had # restored only a few years ago. The Twin Bee is normally based at Siegerland Airport (SGE/EDGS), Germany, and arrived Siljan Air Park (ESVS) in Sweden on July 10, where Mr. Jud has spent his vacations for several years.

    [] UPDATE

German news reports indicate the Twin Bee NHJ had been borrowed from owner by the young commercial pilot Luca Born and his seaplane instructor for instruction flights at Lake Siljan. The body of the second person was recovered on Wednesday, 22 July.

year old Luca was an avid pilot and aviation enthusiast from Hessen, Germany, who had traveled to Sweden to explore his passion for seaplanes. The identity of the instructor has not been made public.

The Twin Bee rides well on the water and breaks fairly cleanly despite the four foot extension added to the hull aft of the cabin.  Some pilots claim the Twin Bee operates well in three foot waves because of its rugged construction and STOL capability.

The twenty four UC-1 Twin Bees made by STOL Aircraft, the &#;s occupy a unique place in aviation history. They were the last multi-engine flying boats produced in the United States. Through a quirk of fate, mine, hull #23, is the newest of the type still flying and, as such, is a unique historical artifact. The FAA Aircraft Register lists thirteen UC-1&#;s. NTSB accident reports show that three of these were destroyed in crashes. A correspondent tells me he has the engines off a fourth. That reduces the total to no more than nine. The Twin Bee indeed is indeed an endangered species.

This detail of the rearward opening cockpit doors demonstrates the potential problem should one accidentally come open during flight.  The doors have three latches each as well as an emergency warning light.  Also visible is the Twin Bee&#;s roomy five place cabin.
