Märta Birgit Nilsson (17 May – 25 December ) was a Swedish dramatic soprano. Although she sang a wide repertoire of operatic and vocal works, Nilsson was best known for her performances in the operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss.[5] Her voice was noted for its overwhelming force, bountiful reserves of power, and the gleaming brilliance and clarity in the upper register.

[edit]Birgit Nilsson was born Märta Birgit Svensson on a farm at Västra Karup in Skåne (km/60 miles north of Malmö) to Nils Svensson and Justina Svensson (née Paulsson). When she was three years old she began picking out melodies on a toy piano her mother bought for her. She once told an interviewer that she could sing before she could walk, adding, "I even sang in my dreams". Her vocal talent was first noticed when she began to sing in her church choir. A choirmaster near her home heard her sing and advised her to take voice lessons.
She studied with Ragnar Blennow in Åstorp for six months to prepare for an audition at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in Stockh

Although she sang a bred repertory of operatic and vocal works, Nilsson was best known for her performances in the operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Her röst was noted for its overwhelming force, bountiful reserves of power, and the gleaming brilliance and tydlig förståelse in the upper register.
Nilsson made such strong imprints on many roles that they came to be known as the "Nilsson repertory". She sang the operas of Richard Strauss and made a specialty of Puccini's Turandot, but it was the music of Wagner that made her career. She once said that Isolde made her famous and Turandot made her rich. Her olympian command of his music was comparable to that of Kirsten Flagstad, who owned the Wagner repertory at the storstads- Opera during the years before World War II.

Biografi
Nilsson var det enda barnet till lantbrukarparet Nils Petter Svensson och Justina Svensson, född Paulsson. De var bosatta på en gård i byn Svenstad i Västra Karups socken i nuvarande Båstads kommun. Tre år gammal började hon ta ut melodier på ett leksakspiano som hon fått i present av en dräng på gården[2]. I en intervju sade hon senare att hon kunde sjunga innan hon kunde gå och att hon sjöng till och med i drömmen. Senare köpte hennes far en orgel till henne.
Hennes vokala talang upptäcktes först av lärarparet Jenny och Erik Pamp i Svenstads folkskola[3]. Fjorton år gammal började hon ta pianolektioner, och hon gick även med i Västra Karups kyrkokör[4].
